OCAPL IN THE PAST

 



The first regular meeting of the Oklahoma Landmen's Association was held in the Skirvin Hotel in April 1947. Thirty-nine members attended the first meeting and the membership peaked in 2013 to 1750 members. In 1962, the name was changed to the Oklahoma City Association of Petroleum Landmen (OCAPL) and changed again in 2009 to the Oklahoma City Association of Professional Landmen.  The OCAPL was recognized in 1993, 1997, 2006, 2016, 2018 and 2022 as the AAPL Local Association of the Year.

In 2007, the AAPL awarded OCAPL members, Jack Sweeney with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his service to AAPL and the industry, Candace Robinson with Best AAPL Director Communication Award and Brian Hennigan with Best Committee Award for his service on CPL Certification. In 2013 member Phil Jones was awarded the AAPL Lifetime Achievement Award for his lifelong commitment to AAPL and the industry.



OCAPL is also very active in the OU/EM Program at The University of Oklahoma and the new Energy Management Program at The University of Tulsa.  Scholarships are given out to students at both universities yearly.

Currently OCAPL has over 950 members. Monthly meetings are held the first Monday of each month September through April. OCAPL heralds several special events each year and prides themselves in the educational programs made available to the members. HISTORY OF OCAPL

Oklahoma Landmen’s Association was formed in April 1947 and held their first meeting with 39 members in attendance. In 1962 the name was officially changed to the Oklahoma City Association of Petroleum Landmen and again in April 2008 to our current name: Oklahoma City Association of Professional Landmen (OCAPL). Our membership was at an all-time high in 2013 with 1840 members. We currently have over 950 active members.

 


 

Historically, OCAPL has been one of the largest local associations under the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) flagship and we are proud that over 75% of our members are also AAPL members. The AAPL named OCAPL as its Local Association of the Year in 1993, 1997, 2006, 2016, 2018 and 2022. In 2007, AAPL awarded OCAPL members Jack Sweeney with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Candace Robinson the Best AAPL Director Communication Award, and Brian Hennigan the Best Committee Award for his service on the CPL Certification Committee.

In 2013, Phil Jones was awarded the AAPL Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2014 OCAPL received the Best Community Service Award. In 2015, we are well represented with the Lifetime Achievement awarded to Jack Richards, Landman of the Year awarded to Julie Woodard, Best Newsletter ~ Large Association, Best Member Communication awarded to Marita Morris and back to back Best Community Service Award! In 2016, Best Local Association Award, Best Member Communication awarded to Robert Hefner, Best Newsletter ~ Large Association. In 2017, Jerrod Hardegree won the AAPL Committee Member Award for his work on the Field Landman Committee. In 2018, Past OCAPL President and current AAPL Director, Nick Watkins, received the Best AAPL Director Communication Award and OCAPL received the Best Newsletter/ Bulletin – Large Association Award and OCAPL also received the Local Association of the Year Award and again in 2022 we received the Local Association Award!
OCAPL is very active in the Energy Management Program at The University of Oklahoma (OU/EM). OCAPL founded the OU/EM Mentoring program and our members mentor 40 students each year.

OCAPL has committed scholarship funds to the OU/EM Program and The University of Tulsa’s Energy Management Program.
OCAPL maintains one of the highest continuing education programs available to AAPL members by offering credits for monthly luncheons and meetings.

Additionally, OCAPL sponsors several annual programs such as The Weekend Take Off and HAPL Webcast which offer our members the opportunity to receive numerous continuing education credits.
OCAPL’s Industry Affairs and Legislative Affairs committees do an outstanding job keeping up with issues that affect our membership, our industry and the public.

Their monthly reports can be accessed online and are also a part of our monthly newsletter “The OCAPL Record”.
OCAPL currently holds monthly meetings on the first Monday of each month from September to April at various venues, please see calendar for more information.

OCAPL provides these meetings at no cost to our members and guests are welcome to attend for a cost of $30.00.
